October 2024 - Burn baby burn!


I hope everyone impacted by the hurricane is safe and doing well. As for this month's update, I continue to grind away at the southern region/volcano dungeon. Here's what I've worked on and continue to work on throughout October:


I've added 3 new maps tied to the volcano dungeon (work in progress, nearly finished)

  • I'm also in the process of developing the boss of the dungeon fight with some unique mechanics.
  •  5+ new monsters are being worked on for the aforementioned dungeon
  • I started experimenting with some backdrops for the northern mountain, a quick distraction from the volcano work but check out the attached screenshot
  • Lastly, I'll be experimenting with a new tool to improve sprite animations. I plan to showcase these in my next update if it works out


After finishing this current dungeon, I’m considering moving on to the "final" dungeon of the game's critical path. Originally, I planned for 6 dungeons plus a final one to close out the second half, totaling 11 main quest dungeons, before adding optional dungeons and areas. However, I now think keeping it to 3 dungeons and a final one (8 main quest dungeons total) is still ambitious but more manageable, helping to minimize scope creep and burnout. While the "end" is on the horizon, there's still a lot of work ahead—beyond the critical path, I want to create additional optional content to flesh out the world and my vision. I also plan to rework animations (if the new tool works out), and improve the environments by adding more details like plants and decorations to enhance some of the earlier, blander areas.
